Meme is an idea that spreads from person to person within a culture. The concept is related to the biological concept of gene, thus referring to a cultural entity able to replicate itself and to pass down information through generations while maintaining some or all features of the source. The social web Twitter offers an interesting ecosystem through which memetic evolution can be investigated using quantitative methodologies.
